Inspired by Taiwan Ghost Festival (中元節) this month, we created 16 fruit flashcards to help children learn fruit names and what fruits not to invite ghosts.

They are 16 fruits including apple, papaya, pipaya, rockmelon, kiwi, peach, orange, grapefruit, banana, persimmon, grape, watermelon, tomato, peach, pineapple, and plum.

Children can learn fruit names with Bopomofo, Hanzi, and English.

More importantly, you can help them learn some traditions around Taiwan Ghost Month.

For instance, people avoid offering bananas, plums, and pears, because the fruits' names sound like they are inviting ghosts in Taiwanese. The bunches of fruits, such as grapes and tomatoes, are also refrained as they are clusters of fruits, which symbolise the arrival of ghosts in groups. Some fruits are popular offerings laid out to feed and appease the wandering ghosts, such as apples, papaya, pitapya, rockmelon, peach, pear, orange, and kiwi,

Learning Ghost Month traditions makes learning fruit names and Bopomofo more interesting and meaningful.
